What is the difference between flat, round, square and TMT bars?

A flat bar has a rectangular solid section and is commonly specified by width and thickness. A round bar has a solid circular section and is specified by diameter. A square bar has four equal sides and is specified by its side dimension. A TMT bar is a ribbed reinforcement bar intended mainly for reinforced concrete construction.

Is a mild steel round bar the same as a TMT bar?

No. A mild steel round bar normally has a plain surface and is used for machining, shafts, fasteners, foundation bolts, fabrication and engineering components. A TMT bar has a ribbed or deformed surface designed to improve its bond with concrete and is used primarily for reinforced concrete structures.

Which TMT-bar grades does Ferrite supply?

Ferrite’s TMT range currently includes Fe 415, Fe 500D, Fe 550D and Fe 600, along with CRS and epoxy-coated TMT options on its product hierarchy. The selected grade must follow the approved structural design and project specification. The letter D identifies enhanced ductility in grades such as Fe 500D and Fe 550D.

Which standards apply to steel bars?

The applicable standard depends on the product: Structural flat, round and square bars may be ordered to the specified material standard, such as IS 2062 or ASTM A36. TMT and high-strength deformed reinforcement bars in India are generally specified to IS 1786. Plain mild-steel reinforcement bars may fall under the applicable reinforcement-bar specification stated by the designer. The enquiry and purchase order should mention both the grade and the applicable product standard. BIS identifies IS 1786 as the specification for high-strength deformed bars and wires used in concrete reinforcement.

There is no single size range applicable to every type of steel bar. How is the weight of a steel bar calculated?

For standard products: Total weight = weight per metre × length × number of pieces For a round steel bar, the commonly used theoretical-weight relationship is based on its diameter and steel density. For procurement, use the applicable product table, approved manufacturer’s chart or MTC rather than relying only on an approximate calculator. Steel-bar prices vary according to the material, grade, size, weight, quantity, processing requirement, mill source and freight. Are steel bars quoted by kilogram, tonne, piece or length?

Steel bars may be quoted by kilogram, metric tonne, piece, bundle or full length, depending on the bar type and commercial arrangement. What is the minimum order quantity for steel bars?

Ferrite should standardise this information before publishing one fixed MOQ across the category. Until then, buyers should send the complete size-wise quantity breakup for confirmation.

Are steel bars supplied with a Material Test Certificate?

Ferrite states that its steel products can be supplied with Material Test Certificates. Buyers should specify the required grade, standard, heat or lot traceability and test-document requirements before order confirmation. For BIS-certified reinforcement bars conforming to IS 1786, the applicable certification scheme requires the consignment test certificate to identify information such as grade, size, cast or lot number and test results.
