FAQs for Steel Pipes

Ferrite’s published range includes:

  • Mild steel pipes
  • Stainless steel pipes
  • MS ERW pipes
  • Galvanised MS pipes
  • Seamless pipes
  • Stainless steel ERW pipes
  • Round pipes
  • Square pipes
  • Rectangular pipes

Availability depends on the material, grade, dimensions, wall thickness, manufacturing route, quantity and required delivery schedule.

Mild steel pipes are generally selected for economical structural fabrication, scaffolding, fencing, machinery frames and general engineering. They may require painting, galvanising or another protective system when exposed to corrosive conditions.

Stainless steel pipes are selected where corrosion resistance, hygiene, appearance, chemical exposure or coastal conditions are important. The stainless grade must be matched to the operating environment.

An ERW pipe is manufactured by forming steel strip and electrically welding the longitudinal seam. It is commonly used for structural, engineering and specified piping applications.

A seamless pipe is manufactured without a longitudinal welded seam. It may be specified for certain pressure, temperature or critical-service applications, but final suitability depends on the complete material standard, dimensions, testing and design conditions—not only the absence of a weld seam.

A round pipe has a circular cross-section and may be used for structural work or fluid service.

Square and rectangular pipes have flat faces that make them useful for frames, supports, railings, furniture, machinery and architectural fabrication. These products are often specified by outside dimensions and wall thickness rather than nominal pipe size.

Ferrite’s published stainless steel pipe range includes products in SS 304, SS 304L, SS 310, SS 310L, SS 316 and SS 316L across selected round and square configurations.

Grade availability must be confirmed for the required shape, manufacturing route, dimensions and quantity. SS 304 is widely used for general corrosion-resistant fabrication, while SS 316 is commonly considered where additional resistance to chlorides or aggressive environments is required.

The applicable standard depends on whether the requirement is for structural hollow sections, water and gas service, general engineering, stainless process piping or another application.

For certain Indian steel-tube requirements, buyers may specify IS 1239 Part 1, which classifies tubes by size, class, manufacturing process, end condition and surface condition. Pipe schedules such as 40 or 80 define wall-thickness series and should not be treated as material grades.

Ferrite should confirm the exact standard, grade, schedule and testing scope in its quotation.

Provide:

  • Mild steel or stainless steel
  • Round, square or rectangular shape
  • ERW, welded or seamless construction
  • Grade and applicable standard
  • NB/NPS or outside dimensions
  • Outside diameter
  • Wall thickness or schedule
  • Required length
  • Quantity or total tonnage
  • Finish or coating
  • End condition
  • Testing and MTC requirements
  • Application
  • Delivery location

A request such as “2-inch steel pipe” is incomplete without the grade, wall thickness, manufacturing route and application.

Ferrite publishes multiple pipe tables covering NB/NPS, outside diameter, wall thickness, schedule and weight. Square and rectangular products use separate outside-dimension and thickness tables.

Because each pipe family has a different dimensional range, buyers should submit the complete specification rather than rely on one general parent-page size range.

“2 inch” normally refers to the nominal pipe size, not the exact outside diameter.

Ferrite’s published table shows a 2-inch or 50 NB pipe with an outside diameter of approximately 60.3 mm. The same table lists a Schedule 40S wall thickness of approximately 3.91 mm for that size. The exact value must be checked against the applicable material and dimensional standard.

For a standard pipe:

Total weight = weight per metre × length × number of pieces

The weight per metre depends on the outside diameter and wall thickness. For square or rectangular pipes, it depends on the outside dimensions, wall thickness and corner profile.

Use the applicable manufacturer’s table or approved dimensional standard rather than estimating weight only from the nominal pipe size.

Length and nominal size alone are not enough to calculate the weight. A 2-inch pipe can be supplied in different schedules and wall thicknesses, each with a different weight per metre.

Provide the material, manufacturing route, outside diameter and schedule or wall thickness. Ferrite can then calculate the theoretical weight for the required 20-foot or other specified length.

Send the material, grade, pipe shape, manufacturing route, size, wall thickness or schedule, length, quantity and delivery location.

Steel-pipe prices change according to the grade, dimensions, weight, mill or source, coating, testing, processing and freight. A dated specification-based quotation is more reliable than a broad online price range.

Steel pipes may be quoted by kilogram, metric tonne, piece, bundle or complete length, depending on the product and commercial arrangement.

The quotation should clearly state:

  • Rate basis
  • Theoretical or actual weight
  • Supplied length
  • Cutting charges
  • Testing and inspection charges
  • Taxes
  • Loading
  • Freight
  • Unloading responsibility

This allows buyers to compare the total landed cost rather than only the basic price per kilogram.

Ferrite’s Steel Pipes, MS Pipes, MS ERW Pipe, MS Round Pipe and Stainless Steel Pipes pages currently publish an MOQ of 1 tonne.

Smaller requirements may be considered from available stock, while custom dimensions, special grades, specific mills or fresh production may require a different quantity.

MTC and traceability requirements should be stated in the enquiry and purchase order.

The buyer should specify the material grade, standard, heat or lot traceability, chemical and mechanical test requirements, hydrostatic or other testing requirements, and any third-party inspection requirement. Ferrite should confirm the exact documentation included in the quotation.

Ferrite’s MS and stainless steel pipe pages list makes including SAIL, RINL, Jindal, Tata, Pushpak, Mamaya, Mahavir, SKS and Balbir. However, the applicable manufacturer must be verified separately for the requested MS or stainless steel pipe product.

Send the project-approved make list with the grade, standard, dimensions and quantity. The confirmed source, MTC and permitted alternatives should be recorded in the quotation and purchase order.

Ferrite lists painted, galvanised, polished and standard mill finishes across its pipe pages. It also publishes CNC cutting, plasma cutting, SAW, TIG and MIG welding and custom heavy-fabrication capabilities through PRECITECH.

Provide the pipe dimensions, cut length, tolerance, finish, quantity and drawing. Bending, drilling, threading, end preparation or other processing should be confirmed as part of the quoted scope.

The correct pipe depends on the application:

  • Structural frames and scaffolding: commonly specified MS round, square or rectangular pipes
  • Outdoor structures: galvanised or suitably coated pipes may be considered
  • Architectural and hygienic work: selected stainless steel grades and finishes
  • Chemical or coastal conditions: a corrosion-resistant grade such as SS 316 may be considered
  • Pressure or temperature service: the complete material standard, schedule, manufacturing route and testing must be approved by the project engineer

Ferrite can help identify commercially available options, but final pressure rating, structural load and service suitability must remain with the authorised engineer or piping designer.

Ferrite operates from its sales office in Ghatkopar East, Mumbai, and its factory and stock location at KWC Kalamboli in the Navi Mumbai region.

Steel-pipe requirements can be evaluated for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and industrial locations across Maharashtra. Regional dispatch can be planned according to pipe length, total weight, vehicle availability, delivery destination and unloading conditions.
