What is a steel sheet?

What is the difference between mild steel and stainless steel sheets?
Mild steel sheets are generally selected for economical fabrication, construction, machinery, brackets, panels and general engineering. They normally need a coating, paint or galvanizing where corrosion protection is required. Stainless steel sheets contain chromium and are selected where corrosion resistance, hygiene, appearance, chemical exposure or easier cleaning is important. The correct stainless grade depends on the operating environment.

What is the difference between hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel sheets?
Hot-rolled sheets are processed at high temperatures and are commonly selected for structural fabrication, machinery and applications where a mill-scale surface and wider dimensional tolerances are acceptable. Cold-rolled sheets receive additional processing that provides a smoother surface, closer dimensional control and improved suitability for panels, enclosures, appliances and precision fabrication. What is the difference between a steel sheet and a steel plate?
Both are flat-rolled steel products, but the industry generally uses “sheet” for relatively thinner material and “plate” for heavier sections. The exact distinction can vary by product standard and commercial practice. To avoid confusion, specify the actual thickness, width, length, grade and applicable standard instead of ordering only by the words sheet or plate.

Which stainless steel sheet grades are available?

Should I choose SS 304 or SS 316 sheet?
SS 304 is commonly selected for general corrosion-resistant fabrication, kitchen equipment, architectural components, storage equipment and indoor industrial applications. SS 316 contains molybdenum and is generally considered where improved resistance to chlorides, marine conditions or more aggressive chemical environments is required. The final selection should follow the project’s corrosion and material specification.

How is steel-sheet weight calculated?
The theoretical weight is calculated from: Thickness × width × length × material density For procurement, use consistent units and the density applicable to the selected material. Mild steel and stainless steel grades do not always have exactly the same density. Ferrite’s child pages publish indicative thickness-and-width weight tables, but the final quotation should confirm the actual dimensions and commercial weight basis.

How can I get the current steel-sheet price per kg?
Send the sheet material, grade, thickness, width, length, finish, quantity and delivery location. Steel-sheet prices change according to the grade, rolling condition, dimensions, coating, surface finish, mill source, order quantity, processing and freight. A dated specification-based quotation is more useful than a broad directory price.

Are steel sheets quoted by kilogram, tonne, piece or sheet?
Steel sheets may be quoted by kilogram, metric tonne, piece or complete sheet, depending on the material and commercial arrangement. What is the minimum order quantity for steel sheets?
Ferrite’s parent Steel Sheets page currently publishes a minimum order quantity of 1 tonne. Smaller quantities may be considered from available stock, while custom sizes, special grades, decorative finishes or mill-specific orders may require a different MOQ. Send a thickness-wise and size-wise quantity breakup for commercial confirmation.

Are steel sheets supplied with a Material Test Certificate?
Ferrite states that its steel products are supplied with Material Test Certificates. Buyers should specify the required grade, standard, heat or lot traceability, test results and certificate format in the enquiry and purchase order. Third-party inspection or additional laboratory testing should be agreed before order confirmation. Ferrite also lists third-party inspection and NABL-approved laboratory test certificates among its services.

Can Ferrite supply sheets from approved Indian steel mills?
Ferrite identifies itself as an authorised distributor and MoU customer of SAIL and lists relationships with producers including RINL/VSP, JSW, Tata, ESSAR and JSPL. Its MS Sheet page also publishes several sheet-source and rolling-brand names. Send the project-approved make list with the grade, thickness, dimensions and quantity. The confirmed mill, origin, MTC and permitted alternatives should be recorded in the quotation.

Can steel sheets be supplied in custom sizes or cut lengths?
Yes. Ferrite lists cut-to-size materials and customised structural-steel production among its services. Provide the grade, thickness, finished width, finished length, cutting tolerance, quantity and identification requirement. The available cutting process and edge condition should be confirmed before order placement.

Are perforated, galvanized, colour-coated and decorative sheets available?
Ferrite lists galvanized, colour-coated and mild steel perforated sheets within its MS sheet range, along with stainless steel perforated sheets and selected decorative finishes. For perforated material, specify the hole shape, hole size, pitch, open area, margin and sheet dimensions. For coated or decorative material, state the coating, colour, finish, protective film and application.
